George Zucco plays a dual role as twin doctors--one good, the other evil--in this cheap but enjoyable Poverty Row effort. The evil doctor dabbles in the occult, and after he dies, is exhumed by his hunchback assistant, Zolarr (Dwight Frye), coming back to life as a vampire. Seeking vengeance on his good brother, the vampire murders several locals and soon the inevitable angry mob is after him. Zucco, one of the hammiest actors Hollywood ever produced, is a delight to watch playing both good and evil, as is Frye in what would prove to be his final role (he died of a heart attack the very next year). Director Sam Newfield occasionally triumphs over his limitations and creates some remarkably surreal effects, especially in the climax, which pits brother against brother in a burning building.
